Star Citizen - Chris Roberts, lots of spaceship porn, lots of promises

Yeah, SC is quite different from E:D in this way. The transitions betwen ship and on-foot gameplay feel so much more natural.

Interesting tech analysis on the SC reddit. TL;DR: SC is completely unable to maintain the kind of tickrate that would be necessary for multiplayer gaming.

It’s interesting to see the numbers for it.

It’s impressive that they are still just running an overloaded FPS server a decade into developing an MMO.

I haven’t seen a recent analysis, but as of a few years ago the amount of network traffic was terrifying.

Looks like Big Space got to @Bluddy before he could spill the beans…

That was a weird Discourse hiccup.

I think it just shows how much the current players just want to believe. They tolerate so much crap performance in the name of the dream.

Thanks for linking to this post! Based on what it says, I tried using Australian servers instead of “Best” (which I guess means Europe for me). That gave me a server with ~10 players instead of the usual ~40. And that made a huge difference. So much of the jank I’m normally seeing went away. Especially the AI performed a lot better.

Not great for SC of course, but my experience just improved quite a bit. I’m less interested in the MMO parts of SC and more interested in sight-seeing anyway.

Came here to post a similar thing.

So they can’t meet their roadmap items so they stop using the roadmap? I gotta tell my managers about that since it works for Chris so well.

Thanks. I was wondering what @ShakesMcQueen was posting about.

If you assume they’re acting in good faith and not a scam putting their hands in gamers’ wallets for worthless JPEGs this move makes perfect sense. You only tell the public about your plans once they’re written in stone, that’s rule #1 for community management.

Speaking of worthless JPEGs, when is Cloud Imperium going to dip their toes into NFTs? We all agree this is a thing that is obviously going to happen, right?

Of course part of the problem is that they originally said they were going to treat their backers like they would a publisher.

The wording of the statement makes it clear why they are doing this - they are concerned the unrest/anger over endlessly missed projections will scare prospective SC backers away. It’s not a coincidence that this comes in an update where they chopped a shitload of stuff off the roadmap again.

As for NFTs - they are 100% inevitable.

Right, they started as a kickstarter and that transparency allowed people to look into their completely F’d up development, which they’d really rather not happen.

Absolutely not. It actually goes contrary to what they are trying to do. I think I posted a video from Morphologis exploring the idea higher up.

Edit: Ah yes. This was it:

And yes, the SC subreddit seems to be rioting right now. I haven’t been over there for a week or 2 as I’m so busy. But the thread titles do not look happy.

Of course it would be “bad”. Star Citizen is a gigantic scam.

Where do they expect to find new backers at this point? Alpha Centauri? The depths of the Congo jungle?

You underestimate the number of people with lots of money and little wisdom.

The video doesn’t talk about why it would be bad in general. <unwarranted snark removed. The project is messy. Can’t argue that>

It’s not only Reddit and outlets. Morphologis again on why it is a mistake:

I do enjoy his style. He’s fairly no nonsense.
