Star Trek Discovery (2017)

Yes, they secured the rights to stream the show outside the US and Canada.

Loads of premature gnashing of teeth. Does it look like what we think Star Trek should look like? No, not really. But it might still work. They might have a reason why these Klingons look so different from any other previous Klingon, maybe these dudes are from a society that might actually exist, instead of proper Klingon “These idiots wouldn’t have made it past the middle ages”?

She’s Spock’s adopted sister? And she never showed up at all before? Ok, so you know she’s going to die.

I’m not saying it’s going to be good, but FFS, give it a chance to appear on TV before making up your mind…

It’s way more fun to be judgey and jump to conclusions.

She’s the main character. It would be a pretty bold move to kill off the main character of a show in the first season.

Like “She’s the main character” means all that much in a post Dragons on HBO world. :D Not that I think she’ll die in the first season if it does well, but Spock never mentioning his dead adopted sister makes sense, no? Fairly logical even…

You know what’s even more logical? This show is just using a garbage tie to the established lore because CBS thinks it needs as much help as possible. Do try to remember that Spock isn’t a real person and he’ll do whatever the license-owner thinks he should do.

Sure. I’ll keep hoping it works though, because the alternative is that it tanks and Star Trek doesn’t return to TV for lots of years, if ever, now that NuTrek is ailing.

I hope you don’t mistake doubt and concern for a desire to see it fail, as often happens in the Star Citizen thread.

TNG was one of the formative shows of my youth; dad and I bonded over TOS, and we went to see most of the movies that have come out during my lifespan together in theaters. I love Star Trek man.

So my doubts and concerns spring from how little this seems to resemble anything I remotely associate with Star Trek :(

How dare people form an opinon based on media released specifically to encourage people to form an opinion.

I have no real opinion about whether the show will be good, but I do reserve the right to think the Klingons look dumb. It could be a great show with dumb-looking Klingons.

This just occurred to me, but I am getting strong Stargate Universe vibes from these trailers. The show is trying to be so serious it ends up boring. Also, I don’t see a lot of science in those trailers.

At this point, all they have left to do is screw up the intro. I predict some horrible heavy metal futuristic song. Along with no cool space shots or ship porn. :(

So pretty much the exact opposite of any of these:

Ha! You didn’t see a lot in Star Trek, either. Star Trek was often a show, like some of the best, about moral and ethical dilemmas, or complicated situations arising from different cultures butting up against each other.

Science fiction takes many forms. Few on television tackle the hard sciences, which is fine by me, as those rarely lend themselves to dramatic presentation on a screen.

I saw a lot of Star Trek.

And yet very little science. :)

Err I learnt alot about science from Star Trek.

Heh. As a kid, Star Trek made me believe it’s about science and technology, and helped turn me into the nerd I am today. As an adult, I recognize that reversing the polarity of the flibbertigibbet is nonsense, but I appreciate the actual drama sometimes being presented.

It’s why it’s a great franchise. It can inspire the young, but it makes the grown ups think.

Technobabble didn’t really become a thing until TNG. TOS managed to mostly avoid [tech] as a plot element.

Yeah, they had Scotty. Didn’t need all that technobabble crap.
