Star Trek Online - QtTHREEEEE IIIINNN SPAAAAAACE! (launch/roll call/gameplay thread)

NOTE: THIS THREAD on the official forums has links that will answer just about any question you have about game mechanics, what the ships at the various tiers look like/can do, and the care and feeding of tribbles and bridge officers.

NOTE NUMBER 2: THE QT3 fleet is called Quarter to Fleet, search for us in the guild finder!

With the “announced” thread at 1600+ posts, and the preorder head start starting up tomorrow, it seems like a good time to start a new, less cluttered thread.

I assume we’re going to start a Qt3 fleet. To the best of my knowledge, all we need to do so is get 5 people together in a group then talk to an NPC somewhere on Sol station. Note: I am not necessarily volunteering to lead the fleet, although I have GMed in the past (Drop Bears FTW). My suggestion is that all QT3ers get promoted to officers for invite capability. We can always reorganize the officer corps if the Fleet actually gets serious, the same way we did in WoW with the Drop Bears.

So, share your character names, planned classes, class builds, screenshots, and whatever else. I’ll make an effort to keep this post updated with helpful links from the thread.

So, on that note: My main will probably be UCee@UnionCarbide, I was Tactilol in Beta but I’m going to go with Engineering in retail, engineers get way too many cool toys like turrets and minefields. Expect to see me and my all-Valley Girl bridge crew fucking up Klingons in a fleet action near you!

Hell Yeah!

I’ll be Spect***@spectf. Not sure on class yet. I didn’t get to play as far into beta as I’d have liked, and never saw tier 2, so some alt’ing may be necessary from the get go.

Do the classes mix together? What I mean is: Is there value in having a group made up of different classes? From the other thread, I got the impression that much of this game was spent soloing.

Yes. Science officers can heal and crowd control/debuff. Tacticals are all DPS all the time, and engineering has cool toys. So it’ll be smoother to have a mix but … not a ton. You can also tailor your own away crew to have a good mix, so it’s hardly crucial.

I’ll update once I’m in. I shall probably have an engineering officer (toys!) with a Minbari crew, on an Escort. Unless of course it turns out I’m better at cruisers, which is possible. :P Not sure if we get to keep our names from beta, so … I’ll update that too!

Thanks for making this thread, UC! Once I’ve determined my Qt3 character’s name, I’ll post it here. The folks on CAG have also asked me to join their fleet, and I don’t want to run two identical classes. One will definitely be a scientist, though. I’ll post more after the head start begins tomorrow.

I’m Dejin@Dejin. Still trying to decide whether to join the Qt3 fleet or the GamingTrends fleet.

I’m already in a RP oriented fleet called Epsilon. Just a lowly grunt as I hate responsibility. Where’s the fun in that?

If anyone wants to look me up though I’m @oddjobxl on global. My main is likely going to be a Human Tactical Officer specializing in Science vessels.

I happen to like the feel of dual phasers and martial arts. Sue me. But for RP reasons, since I plan on spending a good deal of time on Exploration, a Science ship specialty makes sense to me.

Having a mix is definitely important on Away Team missions. Having a mix of Ship Types (although not necessarily Captain Types) makes for more interesting space combat, although at least up to the levels I’ve been at, any mix of Ship Types will work fine. We’ll have to see, but I suspect having different Ship Types may be necessary in the end game content.

If I preorder on Steam, will I get to play in advance?

Also, I already have the beta client installed. How will that work with a Steam purchase? It seems like you only get your key when Steam has downloaded and installed a game for other releases. I want to maintain my beta client (which the dev says I should do), but order the game through Steam…

Should be able to. AIUI anyone with a preorder code can join the Head Start.

Yeah, that’s pretty annoying. I couldn’t figure out how to get my Steam preorder key out of Steam without having it install the client (which I already had installed).

This sounds like fun. I grabbed the CE from Impulse and it appears I’m ready for the head-start tomorrow!

In case anyone is on the fence on which Captain type to choose. I just found out that Tactical Captains can summon Red Shirts at level 35. One of the guys out on Penny Arcade says with the right ability mix you can bring in four Red Shirts into a fight in addition to your regular Away Team.

Yes, you’ll be able to play tomorrow at 10 AM PST. All pre-orders, no matter from where they’re purchased, get to play starting tomorrow. Those who do not will have to wait until Tuesday at 10 AM PST.

I had the beta installed prior to pre-ordering from Steam. If you’re not charged a bandwidth rate, I’d suggest doing what I did: uninstall the beta client, and re-download it via Steam. It took only an hour or so to download. Once you make the Steam purchase (or it might be when you install it), a Steam window will pop up with a button to click that takes you to STO.com, but it’s the wrong page. Go here and enter the pre-order key Steam displays in that window. If successful, you’ll see “Star Trek Online - Preorder” displayed in your Cryptic dashboard.

What, are you partial to Impulse? ;-)

I will be playing at the very least for the first month, and I’ll be running a heal… er I mean science vessel, and I’ll help with the QT3 fleet for sure!

I think the fleet name should be: Quarter To Fleet! :D

It’s more important to have different “classes” in fleet actions and PVP than elsewhere, I think. I’m sure the dynamics will become more obvious at higher levels.

Man I wish I had a desktop to play this on (in the process of saving for one now), as it is it will be a month or two before I even get a chance to fire it up

Im playing to :)

I will be there! Not 100% on what I will be playing, Probably Tac in Cruiser. I´d love to play a Joined Trill, but that is only available in Live not head start so… I´ll let you know when I know!

I saw this posted somewhere else, but with no explanation. What’s the benefit?

Are you one of those Wanderers dudes? I thought so! Go back to playing EQ2! ;-)

And give Sinnsa a virtual pat on the arse for me.
