Star Trek Online - QtTHREEEEE IIIINNN SPAAAAAACE! (launch/roll call/gameplay thread)

Does it still have the janky 3rd person away-team combat or did they finally fix that?

I really wanted to like this game, but I just couldn’t. I also struggled a lot with the ship systems and how they worked. I never seemed to figure that out, which I found troubling, because, it’s an MMO. They’re not supposed to be hard to understand.

Oh man, that ship in the link, the Odyssey class, that’s the one I would get. Fully painted would be awesome, but $350 …

Keep in mind, the prices they mentioned are promotional launch pricing. So the price actually gets higher.

I want to know if they do custom ships that mix/match pieces from various classes.

The link reads like they will do mix-and-match ships, since it mentions pieces that they can’t print.

We didn’t really talk about it here, but I imagine anyone following Star Trek Online is aware that the next season is coming soon called Victory Is Life and set around Deep Space Nine. They have been dropping names of cast members providing voice work, like getting Rene Aberjunois back as Odo, and Nana Visitor as Kira.

But just yesterday they released the rest of the names, and I figured some folks around here (cough cough @BrianRubin) might be interested to know they got Andrew Robinson in the booth as Garak, in addition to Alexander Siddig as Bashir and Jeffrey Coombs as Weyoun. Consider me … interested.

More info here:

Oh fuck. FUCK. Now I gotta play.

Also, the introductory pricing is going to expire soon. Right now, you can get a 12-inch, hand-painted model for $350. The new pricing is going to be $500+

Happy 9th Birthday, STO.

Foundry shutting down.

Because no one left at the studio knows how it works, they can’t add to it or change anything in it. True story.

Aw, rats. The last time I tried my Foundry mission, there were a few too many bugs to really enjoy it, and it was really hard to even find it in the Foundry menu. I blamed that on the number of STO updates that had come out in the meantime, and maybe my lack of skill. I meant to make a few more missions, but never got around to it, especially after I uninstalled the PC version of STO.

It was a lot of fun throwing ideas and scripts together that other people could hypothetically enjoy. I hope other games in the future have that sort of functionality.

Wow, that is profoundly disappointing. I played a lot of Foundry missions, and the best ones were better than the official content.

Incidentally, I tried logging into STO a couple weeks ago and couldn’t see the screen properly. The UI was way too big, and I wasn’t able to navigate to the options menu to adjust things. I guess I need to reset my desktop resolution before trying it again.

Redownloaded STO again last night. My original account which had a few chars in their teens is long gone, so this is my newer account with just a few dudes at level 5. Anyway, it’s good for the pew pew but still as convoluted a UI is possible. Still, I’ll get some cool ass space porn to watch for a bit then eventually the luster will disappear and I’ll put it back on a shelf for a bit.

I so wish I could skip the tutorial sections though. Those are just horrible, and every time I think I’ll try a new char I sigh and stop/delete right after I finish creating him since I know I’m about to have a few hours of boredom and it’s just not worth it.

Anyone play any of the Age of Discovery content?

Yeah, I have. It’s kind of funny, you’re mostly just chasing around these Mirror Universe dudes around cleaning up their messes. The Mirror Universe Tilly seems to be having fun calling everyone assholes, which feels kind of weird in the Trek universe, but what are ya gonna do.

I really should revisit, I haven’t given the game any serious time since the Legacy of Romulus expansion.

Age of Discovery stuff looks pretty cool, I like that you can hop right in by making a new captain.

Star Trek Online fans, not the developer, actually had a booth at the Las Vegas Star Trek Con I worked. They are hardcore into this game. They have a huge guild, apparently.

I also talked to one of the devs from Cryptic who was wandering about. I don’t think they are thrilled by the City of Heroes server that is up and running now. They’d rather people were playing Champions. :)
