Star Trek Online - QtTHREEEEE IIIINNN SPAAAAAACE! (launch/roll call/gameplay thread)

Yeah thanks! Reinstalling now!

I don’t really ever play this on PC anymore but I can’t turn down a free ship!

Yep. As well it looks really good on my new laptop. May have to start actually playing again.

Grabbed the ship for my 3 federation mains, sadly my 1 klingon character isn’t high enough level to get the free ship for that faction. And I haven’t played at all since the Romulans were introduced, so I am wayyyyyy behind on playable content apparently.

Also how much free Zen do STO Lifetime Subscribers still get? I logged in and have like 28k zen coins. :o

I also got slathered in awards as soon as I signed on. I went and checked to see how long I’ve been “active”.

Also did some news reading, and it appears 3 new dreadnoughts were added back in October!

AND! Back in 2014, they added 10 levels, you can now rank up to level 60!

New ship from the 7th anniversary event: the Lukari Ho’kuun Science Vessel (screenshot taken outside DS9):

The flying wedge design isn’t as interesting as some of the other ships, but the animations on the lit sections are a nice touch. Also, I like the interior:

Why didn’t the Enterprise have any plants on the bridge?

Hey cool, I wonder if that will be made available on consoles? Speaking of which, Agents of Yesterday is finally making it to the consoles, Feb 14. Haven’t tried that out yet on PC, this will be my first run through, heard good things.

Whoa, LaVar Burton to do a few story episodes in Star Trek Online!

Why doesn’t he have on his visor?

Before the events of Star Trek First Contact he got cybernetic eye implants.

Thanks. I think I even saw that movie, but I had forgotten. I guess LaVar got tired of the visor.

My understanding is that the visor was painful to wear, much like Spock’s ears.

I got back into STO over the weekend and had a really great time. I closed off a couple storylines and started a new one, the Delta Quadrant. It’s surprisingly good - downside is that it centers on the crew of Voyager, which I never really got into myself. But the upside is that there’s some interesting story stuff going on here, two warring aliens that have much more interesting motivations than they seem to at first glance. Plus the reappearance of a villain from one of my favorite Next Gen episodes! Really glad I came back to this, feel like I may even try Klingon and Romulan characters at some point.

I realize I’m evangelizing a game that 90% of the board doesn’t care about in the least and the other 30% already played but - I really dig the Delta Quadrant series of missions. I am at the end I think, and I’ve been sent out to gather allies for a final battle royals with the series enemies. But then - in the fleet action that follows I get to assess the enemy strengths and set different allies groups against them according to their strengths. It’s pretty cool and makes the last fight more strategic than usual.

I love STO, but I hate how it’s not a game I feel I can really pick up and play. Whenever I go back to it I feel like there’s a brand new learning curve to being able to play. It always feels like there is a skill tree reset, or a new fundamental feature that breaks everything I’ve done to-date.

It just doesn’t feel like a game that welcomes back players who have been away for a spell. That said, every two years or so I’ll roll a new character and take him to the level cap while enjoying the stories that have been added.

I guess I would have to agree that STO isn’t really a pick up and play game, there’s definitely a learning curve. But I haven’t noticed anything getting broken between sessions for me. Then again, I just set the game aside back in December so maybe not as much was added. There’s definitely some MMO jank that I just have to kind of force myself to ignore in favor of all the other Trek-y goodness, but that hasn’t been too bad for me. I gotta say, for a free game I’ve gotten a lot of enjoyment from it.

Oh my god, my wallet is already screaming at me.

My first thought is bummer, since my Kelvin timeline heavy cruiser is on my Xbox account, but then my Odyssey class ship is on my PC account so maybe yay?

Want to know how to get me back into STO? This is how you get me back into STO!?

What do you all think, should I get a model of the USS Pasta Bolognese or the USS Pizza Margherita? Or both?

I can safely say that I will not be able to afford one.
