The Crew 2 - Planes, boats, and automobiles

Thanks for the reminder. I’ve been looking forward to giving it a try.

I had a couple of hours with the open beta. They fixed the controller issue so I can finally play with my ancient logitech gamepad.

The dynamic switching between car, plane, and boat sounds good in theory for roaming, but in reality boat is too specialised for general use.

There are crap ton of things to do, but I’m not sure it has the same depth as The Crew 1, maybe they deliberately gimped the open beta. At this point I’m still only ~65% through The Crew 1 I don’t see how I will have time for this.

Tried the open beta for a while on Sunday. Couldn’t get force feedback to work at all with my wheel, and the game would occasionally lose the mapping to the brake pedal. Saw no way to control pitch on the planes with the wheel or M+K, had to plug in a gamepad to do that.

I guess the cars handle better than the first game. It’s still on the arcade side of the spectrum. The plane and boat events I tried were GTA levels of uninteresting.

I wish the open-world aspects were better incorporated into the racing. I’d love to see a Gumball Rally style race. Coast to coast, point A to B, maybe a couple of checkpoints on the way but otherwise the route is up to the player.

This didn’t happen in the first game. It makes me wonder what kind of goofball shortcut the storefront artist(s) were using.

Lots of issues.

Just imagine you’re driving across a 1/25 scale model of the U.S. made by David Lynch, you’re good.

RPS also unimpressed (with the single player version.)

I get the sense that Tom’s upcoming review will also be unkind.

this was one of the funniest things I read in a long while, still drying my tears from laughing … I hope they don’t fix it…

Yeah, that was really funny. Bravo.

Sounds like a “Everything and the kitchen sink” game design attempt that misses pretty badly.

Wait, there’s a separate multiplayer version? I’m not kidding. Is there? If there’s some way to play this multiplayer, to race with or again people, I haven’t been able to find it!

Apparently The Crew 2 exists in a time warp era of 2006, when multiplayer is something that people were willing to wait for happily, months after release.

For now, apparently no. Just friend high scores lists. Which is the same amount of “multiplayer” as Renowned Explorers.

That. Is. Amazing.

This is both amusing and depressing.

AFAIK PvP is coming in the next few months. Right now it is only coop.

Me and my wife spent a hundred hours in The Crew driving around together, co-oping the story, doing challenges around the world and finding unlockables. The Crew 2 has simply gutted the world and leaves an empty wasteland left with little to do. We both find the quest for “followers” to be distasteful. What a mess. I’m glad we had the Beta to quickly realize what a waste of time this game was. After such an amazing experience in the original, I’m actually surprised with how bad this game managed to be.

The open world driving sim concept simply does not appeal to me, unless you can step out of the vehicle to do other stuff like in GTA. (E.g. an open world “do everything” sim.)

Precisely this.

It is amazing to me how badly Ivory misjudged everything.

I loved Crew 1 (only played after WR update). But it had those problems - shitty colision model, poor driving physics even for an arcade, nonworking mirrors, story that could have used less cringe…

Most people, from what I saw online on reddit and what not, wanted these things fixed + new cool map (like Japan or Europe) for the second game.

Instead they do not fix anything, make most stuff worse, rehash the map, and add boats and planes, both of which are boring.

And of course for me as someone who played Wild Run for 150 hours and explored the whole map, playing Crew 2 is meaningless. I played the beta, drive through some cities and locations, saw that yes, it is the same map for the most part, and uninstalled it. At best this game is like another expansion to the first game, not a sequel.

Looks like even the lighting was actually downgraded:

As far as I could tell, the open world component is optional. I could select the races and activities from menus, and warp directly to the events. It may be possible to ignore the free driving aspect completely.
