The Fall of Harvey Weinstein

Frida was a little porny for a biopic. Really sickening that those scenes were coerced out of Ms Hayek.

He was mostly done anyway, thought I suppose he could have done Broadway still. He was playing grampa roles in movies.

At least now he doesn’t get to be an elder statesman and get a lifetime achievement award.

So when do we get dirt on Clint Eastwood? He seems like he treated women like shit. Doesn’t he have a child or two he’s never acknowledged?

Eastwood was an amazingly handsome man; I doubt he ever had to take many measures to get a little sumpin’ sumpin’.

But it’s never about the sex so much is it about the power.

We all know that Clint harassed an empty chair.

That’s a great article. It should be linked every time someone posts worries about #metoo becoming a witch hunt… or a hunt by witches… or whatever.

To play devil’s advocate, she’s speaking from a journalism-centered world. Social media has no standards to meet, only the willingness of the victim to say something.

But so far every time it seems like we’ve hit peak overreaction, we almost always hear more supporting details. It’s still TBD.

What’s been so great about all about this, as great as anything like this can be, is the lack of false accusations. More surprising to me is the amount of men not even trying to fight it, they all just fold like a house of cards. Would that have happened 50 years ago?

I hope this will give more women courage to speak out and help reduce rape and assault in all it’s forms. Date rate especially.

Apparently there is news now about ESPN hiding sexual harassment cases.

True. But so far there haven’t seemed to be too many instances where it’s ONLY a single social media accusation. Almost everything has involved a new article that was about to come out or else a complaint to HR.

In this thread, the only one I can think of that was triggered solely by a social media post was that IGN writer guy a month or so back.

This wouldn’t have existed 50 years ago because the media would’ve kept it quiet for them.

During JFK’s brief presidency he would have the secret service find women for him. He would have women in the white house and at hotels away from the white house. The press knew about this but it just wasn’t reported.

Those days ended in politics a long time ago for the most part. I would imagine it was like that in Hollywood as well.

And would JFK’s misadventures fit into the Weinstein category? He’s a well known, at at least generally believed to be a notorious womanizer, but did he coerce women into bed? Any accusations of harassment or abuse? Rape? I don’t know much about him except the Marilyn Monroe business, and not a lot about that.

I’d be extremely surprised if none of those women were government employees. As the president, that’s implicit coercion right there.

We would say that now, but we’re looking back on this from a vantage point fifty years on. What would his peers and the general public have thought during his term? We already assume the media knew and was complicit in hushing these things up.

I haven’t read anything that calls JFK a rapist. But as for coercing…I guess maybe you would put him in the same league as the rock star who has women come to him. I do wonder how many women he bedded who thought they were special though.

After reading about JFK I actually went away having lost more respect for Bobby.

Do you really think Camelot would have existed in the White House had the public known?

I don’t know. I already said I don’t know the extent of his flings. I know about Marilyn Monroe. I imagine some folks would vote for him just for that.

Lewinsky may be better to examine since we know the media buried that story (heck, they may have tried to bury Weinstein) and Bill argued it was consensual but then Lewinsky tried to join the #metoo campaign anyway.

So there’s all that to dig into if you’re so inclined to the hypotheticals.

Personally, it’s Friday, so I’m content to call everyone a bunch of corrupt assholes and go grab a beer.
