What about an FPS like WW2Online where you play a Nazi and are killing the Allies? What about some PvP games where the point of killing is just to cause suffering (aka griefing). e.g. in Shadowbane you could demoralize a guild by repeatedly attacking and killing them.
I think the problem here is that people like you may perhaps experience games as a cathartic experience but not all of us do. We do things in games that have no reflection of our desires in real life. I love violent FPS but I have no desire to own a gun in real life. Many males play female characters in MMOs and even roleplay as female but they are not effeminate in real life. A straight guy could roleplay gay and it doesn’t mean that he’s experimenting, he’s just not homophobic. The point is, if you feel it’s too much for you then don’t play it and stop judging those who do play it.
So… games for pedophiles = perfectly fine?
Nazis killing allies isn’t the same thing as Nazis capturing Jews and feeding them to the furnaces.
In a FPS with Nazis, the objective typically is to win the match by capturing strategic points. It is not so much who you are as what you do. I thought I made that distinction clear.
A game where you play Hitler isn’t bad because you play Hitler. A game where you kill people isn’t bad because you kill people. What makes a game good or bad, in a moral reguard, is why you kill people. Are you killing them to defend the homeland or to protect innocents? Thats fine. Are you killing them for the pure pleasure of watching them die? That isn’t fine.
This isn’t so much about censorship because I am against that. This is more on the lines of how broken people are who could gain pleasure in such an activity, even if it is ‘pretend’.
We have ‘bad word’ filters on forums and virtually every MMO out there. We have this idiotic ban on sexuality in games. Yet, torture? That is totally OK.
I remember when I heard about the first “gay wedding” on EQ. It was a huge issue because the GMs would not marry two guys. They would marry a man and a woman. WTF is with that? Norrath isn’t America, it isn’t Christian. Why should something like that have any relevance? Yet the moral line is that gay marriage (or gay anything) is unacceptable. Oh the horror! Then again, torture is A-OK. What kind of fucked up social values do we have?
With respect to the sex mod: Why isn’t that on the official forums? Why isn’t there some ‘endorsed’ sex mod like this torture mod (its endorsed because the info and all that is hosted by bethelsda)?
Why doesn’t someone make a ‘fake’ sex mod with all sorts of graphic implications and do a write up and post it on the official bethelsda forums. Lets see how long until the post is deleted or locked.
In all seriousness Slyfrog, I really find the idea of hurting people, even just emotionally, repugnant. Issues such as the one in this topic do not make me angry. They make me sad and disappointed. They make me want to distance myself even further from humanity then I already am. If things like this are OK for the typical human, then it just means I am somewhat non-human and my connection to ‘being human’ just got weaker, while my contempt for humans just got stronger.
Then maybe you should spend less time on the intarweb, which is a den of vice, iniquity, and folks who don’t think the missionary position is the be-all end-all.

Why not? Produce some evidence of harm, otherwise what’s your point? Games have murder on a mass scale, something entirely illegal in real life, but that’s irrelevant because none of it is real.

I just don’t think you should allow people with very real and very dangerous behavioral problems to indulge in their fantasies, which is what a game for pedophiles would let them do.
On the other hand perhaps a legal and harmless outlet would improve matters?

Sadism on this level is not normal. I’m sorry, but if you enjoy this type of “game” then you have a psychological abnormality and probably need help. You don’t need a simulation world to feed your perversion.
Hmmm, interesting thought. The reason child pornography is illegal is because it has a victim, the child in the photos. But a digital representation with no victim, while sick, raises interesting moral dilemnas. Would that be considered illegal since there is no victim?
I believe it’s still illegal. Or at least it’s in the legally grey area approaching it.

Whether or not this sort of game-play is inappropriate is ultimately dependent upon how it stimulates the player. For me, this mod is no different than watching Tom and Jerry beat each other over the head with hammers – it’s just harmless fun that doesn’t come across as real in any way whatsoever.
Frankly I’m a little bit more worried about people who can’t distinguish between sadism and a game where you are not inflicting pain on anyone (real) than the guy who plays this mod.
