The Theme Song Thunderdome

Kind of on-the-nose, perhaps, but it’s all I’ve got. This was surprisingly hard!

The problem I’m having is that I think Superman, I think the John WIlliams theme. I mean, how can you not?

So I tried to go the opposite of that, find something like an acoustic blues guitar or something, but nothing seemed appropriate for Superman.

So instead I went the opposite way for content, rather than sound. A song about how anybody can be a hero, maybe just a hero to one other person.

I hope this isn’t the song Djscman wanted to disqualify, but I rather suspect that was a song by some rotating physicians…

Some great contenders so far! Any other entries? The polls will open tomorrow afternoon. Afternoonish.

The piece was inspired by a dream the composer had where a giant oil tanker rose out of the water and shot off into the sky like a rocket, and I think it conveys the power and awe of the character.

(EDIT: I don’t know why none of my YouTube links are previewing correctly right now…)
(EDIT 2: Thanks Craig!)

Well they need to start at a new line. So simply going to the first part of the link and hitting enter might suffice.
EDIT removed video as now redundant

Oh. Huh. I feel like I’ve done that before. Fixed now.

Thanks!

Let democracy commence, and not even the Last Son of Krypton can change its course. The polls close tomorrow at 2 pm Central time.

Congrats to @JoshL for his narrow victory with David Bowie’s Heroes. You’re up! And you’re not beholden to @forgeforsaken 's idea that you’ve got to choose a villain next… but if you’re stuck, think about it!

(The song that was too on the nose for me was indeed John Williams’ Superman theme. If I was eligible to submit a song here, I might have gone with one of his Olympics themes, or Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man, or, sure, the Spin Doctors re: uncomfortable rocks in their pocket or being pals with Jimmy Olsen.)

All the choices were great. That was some fascinating John Adams trivia, and I’d love to see an oil tanker shoot into orbit.

Aw, you guys. Anyway I will definitely pick a villain, because that’s a good idea. Ideas percolating…

Round 15 start

Ok. I wanted to dismiss all the “cosmic” villains, like Thanos, or Zod. I wanted to do someone a little more down-to-earth, get some down-to-earth music suggestions.

So let’s get a theme song for this guy, who, I think, definitely needs a theme song:

gruber1

You know who I’m talking about. The cool cucumber pictured here:

It’s Hans Gruber. Don’t call him a common thief! He’s an exceptional thief. But the real question is, what music should be playing when he walks into a room? Or falls from it?

Yes Hans, we do hate you. But we love to do it.

It jumped immediately to mind, and I can’t shake it. I reserve the right to replace it with an appropriate Vanden Plas song, should I find one.

Going largely off my gut reaction, I’ll pick this:

Powerful, complex, classy, and European.

“Hast” is not “hate.” Hate in German is hässt. The subtitles in that video have been driving me crazy for decades now. Hast is “have.” They’re saying “you have asked me” not “you hate me you ask” which wouldn’t make any damn sense. Mind you, I’m not saying it’s a bad choice for Hans. :)

Anyway, great choice of villain. How about a song about how Hans thought this was going to go:

It doesn’t help things that they recorded an English version where he does say “You hate”.

I think the German version is trying to play with the homonym. Eh, still drives me crazy. The name of that song, as printed, is “you have.”

Was just coming to say that :)

Look it ain’t my fault that Rammstein mistranslated their own lyrics @vinraith , I’m trusting the authors!

Not trying to impugn the messenger, Craig! And it’s still a good choice, you just inadvertently tripped a 20-something year old pet peeve of mine.

I almost went with “You’re A Mean One, Mister Grinch”, for who would be so despicable to pull off a heist on Christmas Eve during a company Christmas party during a Christmas movie?

But instead I went with a song that captured Hans Gruber’s actions. He pretends he’s a terrorist. People standing on chairs with their hands up in the air. The club about to go into flames, if he gets his detonators back. But, be careful, Hans! If you fall, it won’t be cute at all. Hans in the air, uh, Hans in the air.
