Tom's coming back

Wait, are we now talking about Zylon?

I know I’m safe; Tom’s going to need me to explain Bane to him again after the new Dark Knight movie!

I just don’t see the supposed problems that occurred in Tom’s absence. Sure, there’s some threadshitting and general douchebaggery, but IMO no more than there was before Tom left. And I guess maybe he doesn’t care about that stuff anyway, based on his recent post? P&R sucks, but it was unmoderated before Tom left anyway.

And yet we still continue to discuss games, TV, movies, etc. in a generally civil and interesting way. We even had a drama-free Secret Santa where the forum members (including a large number of the supposedly troublesome posters) demonstrated their generosity. We’ve also had an obvious drop in drama over controversial bannings.

So I gotta say that the “no moderation” experiment seems to me to have been no worse and in some ways better than it was before.

My grammar sucks because I am American, but I think all I’m guilty of is a missing comma there.

2012: The Year We Make Tom-tact

Yep. I can think of only a couple of extreme posters who add no value and whose removal would benefit the forum. Their uselessness has been more than compensated by the return of a number of great contributors.

Hopefully common sense prevails. Past indications suggest this might be a somewhat forlorn hope.

As a fellow American, I would urge you to re-read the original quote in context.

Sorry I already forgot what I was talking about.

American attention span and all that.

It wasn’t the end of the world, but I clearly noticed a negative impact. People just got really, really, nasty.

Banning random people is nasty too and you can’t put that on your ignore list.

I dunno, stusser - people get nasty whether or not Tom’s moderating. His being back in the saddle just gives people one more thing to be all nasty about.

Don’t lie. This place became the pornohub/stormfront/nigerian identity-thieving hell-hole of jerri blank’s fevered imagination.

It was never that bad before. Most people at least attempted to appear civil. Remember I see all the reported posts, although I only act on spam.

I really didn’t see the negativity or a turn for the worse either. Is this all in the video games section, cause I don’t go there!

Can you provide some examples? I recall a really nasty thread involving Dawn Falcon, but he wasn’t part of the “old guard” that I think Tom is concerned about.

Other than that I just don’t see it. People get nasty here, sure. I don’t think Tom leaving has made it worse. Moreover, in the past Tom has jumped into threads where nastiness has been reported (particularly in P&R) to effectively say “I’m not doing anything about this, deal with it.”

Is it possible that it’s not worse, you’re just more sensitive to it because you’re expecting it to be worse?

No, it definitely got worse. Like I said, the world didn’t end. But there was negative impact.

I’ll throw my hat in to say that the only effect I’ve seen from Tom’s self-imposed exile is an uptick in the obviously disruptive/deranged posts from folks like Octonoo and Dawn Falcon. Other than that, the forum is pretty much chugging along like it always has, except without weekly bannings disrupting everything.

I too, would like to see some examples of this supposed overall decline in board quality, because I’m not seeing it either, but I also have some of what people would consider the big offenders on ignore.

That would certainly do it. It’s mostly the repeat offenders shitting up threads. I don’t have anybody on ignore.

I knew it!

“As of now they’re on Double SECRET Probation!”
