I would, if they ever decided to bring Resident Evil 7 VR to PC… :(

I don’t think there’s much else that is really well-done horror, instead there’s a lot of cheap jump scare stuff.

Though some guy is doing a mod for the infamous P.T. demo using HL:A:

I’ve only tried a handful.

Rush of Blood got me a few times with the jumpy scares. I actually really enjoyed that, and my family did too.

RE7’s demo did nothing for me. I don’t know if it wasn’t a problem on my end, but the monster characters went too close to the screen to be scary & were glitchy instead.

There was another horror game they gave with PS+, they live die or something like that. It was spooky without being too much for me. Turns out there’s a flashlight and I played half the game creeping around dark hallways without it.

Haha dying in an out-of-control triplane is horror enough for me, thank you lol.

So, is there any consensus on what the “best” VR peripheral is these days? I put “best” in quotation marks because I know it depends on criteria, but if someone was looking for a VR headset and had these things to factor in

  • Ease of use. I dont want to use ten billion wires and setup
  • Price is of little to no objection. I kinda tend to want to pay a bit more if its better
  • I have a pretty beefy pc and want something that can utilize that.

I have been looking myself, of course, and have seen Oculus Quest (64 GB?) and the steam headset, but was curious what the Qt3 hivemind had to say!

Thanks!

Well, for PC the native VR headsets are the Rift S and the Valve Index.

One is $400 an the other $1000. Rift S has more ease of use. Index beats it in several other areas and needs indeed a beefy pc (it can reach very high screen refresh).

I think there’s a few main choices, but it depends a bit on what you want to play.

Do you want a primarily portable system, that can also connect to PC at the cost of a bit of comfort and fidelity?

  • Get a Quest.

If you’re sticking to the PC for mostly seated stuff, or tethered close proximity:

  • Do you want the best fidelity? Get Valve Index.
  • Do you want the best value, support, and simplicity? Get Rift S.

I broke down and bought a Vive DAS and made myself a FrankenQuest. Surprisingly easy mod and it looks attractive. I really appreciate the ease of adjusting it for other users and the built in headphones, but I have to say it’s only marginally more comfortable (for me) over a stock Quest setup (with counterweight) so I’m not sure it’s worth the expense. I even added a counterweight to the DAS. (I used leftover materials from the FrankenQuest mod, so it looks attractive too) and that helps but still isn’t a gigantic improvement. I suspect it may be somewhat due to the shape of my head.

Is valve fiddly? I checked out the Rift s briefly, and also see a ton of wires.
I am guessing thats to be expected?

As long as it isn’t as annoying as the Wii or the PS3 weird system where you had to put something on top of the tv.

Rift S should have two cables. USB and video. Well from what I can see, it’s al combined into one, and then it splits into two at the end, when it connects to the computer.

Index will have that, and two satellite stations you have to put in corners of your room. Hence more setup.

If you want no cables then Quest is the solution.

VR E3 stream in 50 mins

Rift S has one cable! :D
It has two connectors coming out, one goes to Display Port and one to USB.

Any highlights that stand out to you?

Overview can be seen here in case people aren’t following other E3 threads.

Haven’t had a chance to watch everything yet but at a glance it all seems a bit underwhelming. Shooters, content updates, and ports.

In Death coming to Quest though, that’s one I’d probably double dip on assuming it’s not already cross-buy.

And Operencia is a well-regarded blobber, but I don’t think VR would necessarily add a lot to it. Cool none the less.

I thought the same about Operencia, blobbers as you call it are by definition games that work thanks to some abstraction, and VR is usually the opposite of abstraction.

I think the best case scenario for you would be the Quest. You get the portability, no-wire experience when you want. But you can also hook it up to your laptop to play non-Quest games whenever you like via Oculus Link.

The first thing to notice is what it was missing: no Beat Saber new DLC, no Lone Echo 2, no Medal of Honor VR. It seems Oculus only participated a bit. Maybe MoH will appear on the EA showcase.

The free update for Walking Dead could be good. Horde mode and difficulty options.
Vacation Simulator will also have a free DLC.
Wraith could be good, but we won’t see a real trailer until August.
Paper Beast looks chill, there is demo in Steam

Panther is too early in EA, from what I can see in the reviews

This is an adventure game that looks nice. scifi murder mystery?

The radio show looks like a nice idea

This is totally the 0 grav version of Gadgeteer, that I like

Another cool adventure

Cosmophobia could be a better, scifi version of Dreadhalls

This one looks ambitious, too much imo, I don’t trust it

Vertigo was interesting and varied. It seems a remaster of something I don’t know

Pistol Whip is promising tons of new updates, although I suspect the more meaty aspects will be paid dlc

So in summary nothing super big, Oculus is hiding his cards close to the chest, EA has two VR games so maybe they will present it later, maybe Ubi that have shown interest in VR before will do the same on their showcase.

Low-fi looks like a nice environment, but really empty. Even the gameplay description doesn’t say you’re actually doing much, like flying around handing out tickets and basically ‘other stuff’. It is available on Itch though for any brave souls with $35 to burn…

Yeah Ubi have their Prince of Persia escape room thing and possibly Oculus-exclusive Splinter Cell and Assassin’s Creed games. Maybe we see more on those.

Great get for Oculus. Lone Echo + Echo Arena happens to be one of the best SP experiences + one of the best esports experiences in VR.

And Lone Echo 2 is practically done, was delayed until later this year. I wonder if this will push it back any more?

They will allow a new way to sideload apps. Through a link, from what I read.

If money isn’t the top concern, the HTC Cosmos Elite with the wireless adapter and the Valve Index controllers is my current setup. No wires at all, lightbox tracking for highest tracking performance, and the valve index controllers for most buttons and grips. But it is NOT cheap.
