Warcraft 3 Reforged - HD remake

Diablo 2 retro installer still unmolested, for now:

reforged:

So classic looks better?

Edit: tried to get same in Reforged as classic for better comparison (couldn’t get camera tilt to cooperate too well):

Not even a little.

What looks better? Is it higher resolution? The font and interface seems almost identical to me, as does the art. Just curious, since you can see it in person and I can only look at these screenshots.

Did you click on the images to bring the larger ones up (not meant dickishly, but there are 2560x1440 images in there somewhere)? I don’t see how anyone can look at the amount of detail in the reforged graphics and say it looks the same. Much high poly count models, and better textures. Could probably use an option to play with bloom settings, but it definitely isnt the same.

Were people expecting something else, like a new art style?

No, but how about what they actually showed in the previews and trailers? The trailers, by the way, were the old ones up with the preview cinematic bits and UI until release day.

It’s higher density of polygons, better models, the grass and textures are a lot more modern looking, and when you have it in front of you playing in wide screen 1440p and at 144fps it’s really something else.

Here is what the game’s models looked like originally (from those images):

Here are the grunts and raiders from the reforged edition:

Here is the Water Elemental, which ripples like a liquid:

Upgraded Water Elemental

Or the Blademaster:

People were expecting this to look even better from what we saw in the 2018 reveal, but of course, no plan survives contact with the enemy. Maybe they didn’t quite hit their intended target, but it still looks very good and much, much better than the original.

I was on the fence, but Scott’s posts convinced me to buy. Been jonesing for a new game to play, reinstalled Witcher 3 with the HD project mod and uninstalled it after about 10 minutes (I’d forgotten how janky its combat felt, despite loving the game’s graphics, quest content and writing).

The Witcher 3 thread is over here.

He’s talking about buying Warcraft 3. He only cited bouncing off The Witcher 3 one possible reason for doing so.

Have fun, John! I hope it grabs you like it has me. It’s been ages since I played this so most of it feels new to me - one benefit of getting old, I suppose! :)

Well, no 3440x1440 support, it seems to cap at 2560x1440. :(

I saw somewhere there is unofficial support, but the UI and menu’s don’t look right when it’s implemented. Otherwise it seemed to work, but I suspect it’s too much of an advantage in a game like this so it’s not officially an option.

I am a modder and a Blizzard gamer. When I say I hope the Warcraft III modding scene dies as a result of this land grab, I am being completely and 100 percent sincere. Blizzard can’t assert copyright over the general gameplay/concept of a title, but they can assert copyright claims over the art, name, characters, lore, and art created for a custom mod. They’ve now asserted a unilateral right to do so. The proper response from the modding community, in my personal view, is to completely refuse to engage with Blizzard’s landgrab and to take their talents elsewhere. I’d rather see WC3 modding die than see its IP forcefully “granted” to Blizzard like this.

So. Viva Activision!

I’m not sure that will hold up in court, but it won’t stop them from intimidating folks with it.

Rumor has is that Overwatch 2 will also let them claim and collect all the money earned from the huge amount of 3D Overwatch porn they enable.

Rule $$

At this point, it almost feels like Blizzard is actively self-sabotaging.

Looking at this again, how can Blizzard assert copyright on art and lore that 3rd parties create? Is it basically something in the license where by using the tools to make the mod you are agreeing to give them those rights? I guess it is this:

Custom Games are and shall remain the sole and exclusive property of Blizzard. Without limiting the foregoing, you hereby assign to Blizzard all of your rights, title, and interest in and to all Custom Games, including but not limited to any copyrights in the content of any Custom Games .

I won’t be reinstalling Battlenet any time soon.

I like Blizzard’s new corporate strategy of just going full mustache-twirling evil. I hope no one ever creates a single mod for Warcraft 3 Reforged and the game fails spectacularly because of it. No company, no matter how beloved of my youth, should be rewarded for that ridiculous modding copyrighting.

So a big middle finger to Blizzard, they won’t see a dollar from me again without some major changes at the highest levels of leadership.
