Anno 1800, city-building in the industrial revolution

In 1404 you could eventually “defeat” the Corsair by sinking enough of his ships that he essentially makes peace with you.

In a previous game of Anno 1800, I managed to defeat Anne Harlow… but you don’t get anything for it, nor can you do anything with her island/base… The pirates in the Old World just go away for a while, then eventually she starts showing up in a ship periodically, and tries to reestablish her base. You have to sink her ship before she gets there.

Basically it’s a periodic pain in the neck that never stops, and it’s much easier to just make peace and avoid it all.

They have some pretty good ships to sell.

Different than normal ships you can make?

In my current game she’s only come back once. The first time I defeated her she vanished from the diplomacy screen. The second time I sunk her one returning ship her portrait stayed but she’s never got any ships again (since ~15 hours). Maybe a bug?

Yep, like this one:

There is also a legendary item that allows you to build those ships by yourself.

In the game I took her out, she returned three times, in progressively better ships.

I finally broke down and bought it. I can’t remember the last time I paid $60 for a game.

My obstacle right now is the New World, specifically how there’s no damn space on the islands. How do you get around the rivers? You need roads for everything in this one and I can’t find any way to put supplies across a river. Plus there’s a ton of areas on the island with multiple rivers totally cutting it off from a shore.

Try building a road across the rivers.

A road become a bridge, like magic!

oh…

So apparently there’s secret bonuses to expeditions for loading certain commodities.

If you’re referring to the +Diplomacy, +Hunting etc., it’s not secret. When you go to prepare for a voyage and mouse over all of your commodities, it’ll tell you what the bonus is for each good. The specialists on your Items tab also have bonuses if you equip them for voyages.

Bah. Someday I’ll figure out the obvious stuff.

Is there any reason to build ships of the line? 2 frigates is cheaper, the same hit points, the same build time, and slightly more dps. I can only see it if you have super ship items you want to concentrate on one vessel, or an expedition you want to max out Force in but don’t care about Navigation (what expedition doesn’t use navigation though?).

I don’t see any stats on harbor guns. Are some better than others or is it strictly a cost/effectiveness thing?

Only use Ship of the Lines for expeditions until you can send a battlecruiser.

I’m waiting to start a new game of this on Wednesday. They are deploying the new patch, which supposedly fixes the quest bug where you can’t start quests.

Me too. I really wish the patch was out right now.

Just lost half an hour having to reload an old autosave to undo the fire station bug, which I discovered in the middle of a huge city fire that I couldn’t contain without activating the volunteer brigades.

No mention of that bug in the patch…

Anyone else notice that if your power stations are understaffed by even a single engineer, they just turn off completely?

I had a pretty hairy situation where I ran out of something, which unbeknownst to me caused my engineer pop to drop below full employment, which caused all of my stations to stop running, which caused all of my factories to drop to 50% of their usual output, which caused me to start running out of other things.

I spent over $10 million furiously buying goods from other ports to stem the bleeding and get my city running again.

Do you have to buy the game directly from UBISoft? GreenManGaming has the game listed as out-of-stock which I find truly bizarre for a digital product.

I bought it through Steam.
