Battletech by Harebrained Schemes (Shadowrun Returns)

Ahhh, the gauss rifle, the killer feature of one of my other favorite MechAssault mechs, the Hackman! I hope this does well enough to eventually support the Clan expansion.

Is there any reason to carry a single LRM5s? The low damage they do seems useless and the spread they have makes them seem useless unless you mass them.

Missiles, in general, are good crit-seekers and are even more so in this game as LRMs are delivered as individuals rather than grouped into 5-point clusters. But you’re right – if you’re trying to optimize, a solo LRM5 isn’t going to be a particularly effective weapon, even in its intended role, beyond the very earliest stages of the game.

That said, I still use them. Because warts rock in BT.

Im using a Trebuchet right now with Double LRM15s and he rocks (he heats up a bit tho).

Ok I will say I don’t like the way the “technical readout” of the mechs works. I wish it just listed the weapons on each variant in the mech bay, and I don’t like having to actually dig through the equipment list to figure this out.

Also, and a bit oddly, I wish the mech bay would actually show you a picture of each mech. Just the straight data sheets seems dry and kind of a missed opportunity.

There’s a few reasons in this game, although they are a little game-y so depends on how you feel on that. The first is the way evasion works. Basically when the enemy moves they build up evasion points that you need to chip away at to raise hit percentages. Since you can fire the LRMs indirect at range, you can use them to chip away at evasion while doing other positioning and you can do that with an LRM5 alone. The other thing is that they do stability damage which can be particularly useful when trying to salvage mechs so having more mechs able to put on stability damage helps even if you don’t want to devote more tonnage to larger missles.

Cool, played the first story mission and after one hour of sub missions I get a crash to desktop and no autosave. It’s a turn based game, why can’t I have autosave?

I liked what I saw, but It’s going to take a while before I fire this back on.

The lack of a true save dialogue is a truly-boggling WTF

Wow, thanks for the manual and video linked above. I have a bit of Battletech tabletop experience but was wondering “what is that unlabeled yellow meter under heat?” and “what are those yellow brackets around targets?” Now I know!

It’s a good game. Runs well on my GTX 980. No crashes etc.

I agree the UI needs a tutorial or something. It suffers from a lack of what Brad W at Stardock calls “Chicks” - info tooltips across everything. I wonder how the original @tomchick will react to the lack of tooltips in Battletech?

I just had a maddening escort mission that took like 30 minutes to walk my mechs and follow the tanks to the extraction zone. Then the dropship landed right on top of 2 of my mechs destroying them completely. There was no combat so I didn’t have a save and had to start it over. This game has to get an animation speed slider that we can max out.

Oh man please tell me you loaded that to YouTube or something. I realize that sucked for you but that sounds funny as hell.

Look at the bright side kid, you get to keep all the money.

Oh wait, you don’t.

Unfortunately no. This game is weird. I’m always on the edge of tons of frustration but I just keep chugging along. If I could speed up combat by about 300% I’d like this game a whole lot more.

A lot of great ideas here. I hope folks are posting them on the official forums too. If they get enough feedback they can fix these issues. Was someone who worked with the game in this thread?

There is a delay after every action that is making me crazy, reminds me of when XCOM 2 had just come out that had the same thing.

I only played the tutorial but I can see the animation delay as a potential major annoyance. I hated it 10 years ago and I’ve only gotten crankier since then.

I’ll slow roll the game a bit to see if it gets patched in the next couple weeks. I’m not going to stop playing.

The lost saves sound strange. It says game saved at the top of the screen when I start a mission. Is it saving?

Some light reading for those of you who didn’t haunt FLGS when you were kids:

and

if you want to kick it old-school

I feel like I’m missing something I should be annoyed about regarding animations, what again is this issue?

It saves when you start a mission. It does not save in between turns in the mission (XCOM does, for example) so if the ending cutscene crashes you lose all progress. And it is the pseudo tutorial first story mission, which is long and boooring.

Yeah, I am still really on, but that haven’t bothered me at all. On the other hand, an escort mission like @malichai11’s would have drove me nuts. At least you can keep everything moving, sort of, since combat never started.

Thanks for the beta manual @Mr_Bismarck. Read through it at lunch and it was incredibly helpful.
