This story of his was illuminating.
Out at breakfast with my girlfriend at our favorite cafe before I take her to work, and she says she’s going to need my help with something. It involves using muscles. I am intrigued, but cautious.
“Go on,” I say.
“I found a desk,” she says, and shows me a picture of a piece of furniture sitting on a sidewalk. “It’s on the next block from my house, and it’s perfect for my guest bedroom. It has gold trim and will go just right with the bed in there, which is white and gold.”
“Are you sure it’s…
“Sometimes I marvel at how awesome people are. I complain so often about the jerks. But then you meet people like Elaine and Al. And John. And you realize…damn…people are pretty fucking great.”

Oh man, that’s a great story. Never saw that in the thread so thanks for posting!
Yep, me too. I never saw that story before, It was a good one. Thanks for posting.
Wow…learned a lot more about the man. Sounds like he was a great father, so very important for a son. Very sad.
That was a nice read, and I’m still missing xtien. The middle link to QT3 is wrong, pointing to qt3 dot com.

The part about looking for the hidden monkey at Trader Joe really got to me. We do the same with Maizey the wolverine here.

@ineffablebob ,
Oh, I was a smoothie junkie for a while there. I seriously craved them and we had started loading them with protein powder. I saw “we”, but it’s really all Christien’s doing. He’s been amazing about doing what he can to keep me well fed.
But at some point, the cold got to be really painful to my throat. And I just found out today that the bananas might also be burning my throat because of the potassium. But, yeah, I can still do smoothies loaded with calories and protein. I can’t taste …
Also:
I can’t find the reference, but maybe @tomchick can confirm that Christien was the type of friend who would do a dramatic reading of a Laird Barron short story to help someone get through a really bad time.

@ineffablebob , Christien talking about watching the Alien movie franchise with his son.
I watched Alien for the first time with my son tonight. He’s fourteen. He’s been asking for a while but I’ve put it off because I thought it was too intense for him.
“It’s from 1979? Does it look like 1979?”
“Apart from a series of explosions at the end, not really. It’s just really good.”
The reason I thought it was too intense for him was because him mom recently showed him this “Criminal Minds” TV show and he couldn’t sleep at night. It terrified him. So I was leery. And I told him that.
“…
“Wait. Wait! So that’s where that comes from?!?”
“Yep.”
“Cool.”
I watched Aliens last night with my son. I had reluctantly shown him the first movie about a week ago, and he was keen to see the second last night. I needed to do some podcast prep as we were going to record the Hellboy podcast at midnight, but I figured, “What the hell.”
Now I’ve seen Aliens more times than I can count, but watching it with someone who has never seen it, someone you love and are raising, was wonderful. I’m tr…
Apparently my seriously cool friend, @marquac , read this post, and then made this for me. It basically made my day.

“Not bad…for a human.”
I miss making gifs for my friend.
“Why does that look like a green stamp?”
I realize these pseudo live-diaries of us watching the “Alien” movies might be getting tedious. But oh well.
My son insisted we watch Alien3 this morning. I warned him. I did. But he insisted. So we watched the thing.
The amount of crappy this movie is cannot be explained. And I have to say up front, that the guy who adapted The Hunt for Red October, Larry Ferguson, was one of the screenwriters. Face palm.
What’s great though is that we had a blast wa…
“No. Alien: Resurrection is far worse.”
“You’re kidding me. The third one is worse than the fourth one.”
“I don’t think so.”
This is a somewhat reduced (I did not use the word ‘redacted’ I’ll have you know) version of a conversation I had with Tom after my son and I watched Alien3. His contention was that the fourth movie, directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, is worse than the third movie, directed by David Fincher. He makes a good point, in that with David Fincher, you can see where he is headed.…
Here’s a simple breakdown from the end of this side of the “Alien” franchise:
Prometheus is better than I first thought.
Alien: Covenant is worse.
So that balances it out, right?
Negative, Ghost Rider. Prometheus is better by a hair. I’m talking microfiber. Alien: Covenant is worse by a light year.
It was interesting to see my son respond to Prometheus. The scientists act like dopes with accelerating consistency. My objections from the podcast stand. The movie strives to answer questions we…
Thanks, @marquac and @Djscman ! All of those are great to read through.
And I know he truly enjoyed every single one of them. ;)
Apologies, won’t be able to make it, though I really wanted to.

My 11 year old daughter and I will be staying over in Studio City on Friday night. It’s about a 35 minute drive east from the theatricum botanicum. We’ll have a rental that should seat 4. If any nearby non-driving (non-smoking) or car-pool seeking Qt3’ers want a ride drop me a msg.

We’re going to need to find someone to watch my daughter for the afternoon – her school is having a full K/TK play-date, and she’s been excited to go, but then my son has trumpet things in other parts of town. We think we can find someone, but … gotta find someone.

Will be sending thoughts from the other side of the Pacific. Looking forward to seeing photos.
I’m already in town, a few hours north of the venue visiting with family. If people are getting together Friday night, we’ll drive down and spend the night. Otherwise, we’ll see everyone on Saturday.
