Forza Horizon 4 - CaRPG in the UK

So it turns out the Peel P50 is an amazing skill points vehicle. Its perks include: 8x skill multiplier, 3x skill multiplier gain rate, 1 second longer skill chains, and several skill point increases.

I souped one up to S1 and go to the tree farm outside the Huntsman Lodge house which is east of the lake. Just messing around with drifts, smashing into things, and jumps hits the 500,000 total point limit very quickly. It is un-driveable on normal roads however.

I am quite surprised that this is even possible.

The Laracer story events are great. It’s a shame they’re locked behind level 40, but I recommend doing them as soon as you get there.

It’s funny, having played The Crew (1) I find the map feels a bit small. I had naively assumed it would be similar, with most of the UK playable. The UK is pretty small to start with, how can I be locked into just an areas south of Edinburgh?

I love the integration of your Xbox friends list. Suddenly seeing Tom Chick ahead of me in my races makes it feel more like I am racing against people I know. Plus I can lower the difficulty and make you all poor drivers…

Sooo… I let my daughter drive the Lotus I got in a wheelspin (Really cool car when driving in first person. Makes you feel like one of the Thunderbirds).

It doesn’t quite look “as new” anymore. :/ She had a ball though.

Not that I don’t manage to get myself in trouble on my own.

Both front and back wheels were off the ground and spinning happily in the air. Nice view though.

Every time I start playing this game for just one race, I just can’t stop going to the next event, the next board to smash, the next beauty spot. It’s so much fun.

It’s vastly more detailed than The Crew’s map, though. And it’s not really the area just south of Edinburgh. It’s Edinburgh, bits of the Highlands, bits of the Lake District, bits of the North East and so on.

FH isn’t trying to do what the Crew does, namely create an extremely rough, broad strokes facsimile of an entire country which more or less accurate geography but not much character. It (and all its predecessors), uses a given country as inspiration for creating a variety of tailored environments but doesn’t in any way attempt to match reality at more than a very local scale. FH4’s Edinburgh is probably more accurate at the centre than any city in The Crew, but that’s about it.

Well, and Uffington, which is not very north at all.

I get it, I do. I don’t expect a direct correlation, indeed I agree with the Crew approach of hitting the highlights and going a bit blank in-between. I think that is what they are doing here, and I think the road network they have created to connect those points is interesting and varied. I love what they did with Edinburgh. I just find their specific selection… a bit weird. If you are going to smash together a bunch of interesting places why not let me feel like stuff is basically in the right location and I am hooning about most of the UK?

I am convinced by their sense of specific place, it does feel distinct to the US map of the crew. But the choices they made in bounding the map just makes it feel smaller to me.

Let’s just agree to blame the UK for being so small shall we? :)

Uhh…The Crew I was 1900 square miles.
UK is 93600 square miles. Even if it’s ‘pretty small to begin with’, it’s still way bigger than most game wolrds.

It’s definitely smaller. I mean, it’s only about 10 in game miles from one end to the other. It’s a fundamentally different approach. In FH, the bits between the “highlights” aren’t bland, they’re the highlights. The road network and the landscape you can drive across is the point, not the towns.

Because they’re not trying to model most of the UK, or even the Scottish borders. They’re picking some distinctive thematic bits and making a gorgeous environment out of it. It’s not like they modelled the whole of Australia in 3 or France/Italy in 2 either. They just took some distinctive elements of those landscapes, plonked a city somewhere for street races, and created a playground out of them.

On Sunday night I quit right after unlocking the full game (finishing the first year tutorial season). So yesterday, I fired it up for the first time to see the seasonal events. I did about 3 of them last night.

First I started in my new home in the woods.

Oh man, I had such a blast. The Halo Event was soooooo much fun. The reward I earned was a bit underwhelming. Here’s me as Master Chief, sitting beside the Warthog as I get my prize:

And then, just when I thought that couldn’t be topped, I did a Rally monster race, where I was racing around this warehouse with a bunch of powerful S1 Rally cars. Oh my god, that was bonkers fun. This is a race in which you’re almost constantly turning, and you’re in a really powerful rally car that can help you compensate for small mistakes you might make. To earn the best reward for the event, you had to come in first place against Expert Drivatars. It took me three tries to finally come in first place, and each try was just pure unfiltered fun.

I prefer The Crew approach, I think. Yes, it’s blander, but I have more sense of distance and traveling when I drive somewhere. Also, maybe my situational awareness is just poor, but I don’t actually notice much of the scenery when I’m bombing along at 140 mph.

On the other hand, I keep seeing people taking about the pure fun of Forza so I should probably dive back into FH3.

That’s what I did!

Just won a Ferrari California 250 - 8 million credits worth, quite pleased with that one

I bought all the houses up to the one that cost $5M. That’s where I stop, I won’t be spending $10 or $15 in the other remaining two!

I don’t understand how I can possibly complete all the Seasonal events before it changes to Winter. I did a few things yesterday, I did several hours of seasonal activities today, but I’ve still got more than half to go. There’s no way I can finish them all in only 3 days.

I also don’t see how I’m going to finish the normal game activities if I’m always going to be playing catch up on the seasonal activities. Maybe the seasonal activities come back around? So in 4 weeks I’ll have a shot at finishing the Autumn activities again?

Does your car driver avatar meeple thing age appropriately with all this rapidly advancing seasonal stuff? If I’m not steering an octogenarian through a brick wall by the end of the game I’m gonna have words for somebody.

So wait till next month. This game doesn’t want you to finish it quickly. It wants you to keep playing sporadically for months and months. They’ve made the progression even flatter and the credit grind even more drawn out than last time, to my annoyance.

Yeah money seems tighter but it may be me tunibg all the cars i love, really digging the older stuff this time round, playing a lot at A class with a wide variety of cars.

Loving the Escort Mk2, Escort RS Turbo, Audio Quattro, Lancia Integrale, Lotus Elise, Porche GT2 and Ferrari Californa 250 and the XJ220.

Barn finds are great this time round as well

Unfortunately the $10M house is necessary to own for one of the barn finds.

Got a Carlton dance from the wheelspin. I’m done with the emotes, that’s staying permanently equipped. :)
