I had the exact same question and exact same incorrect answer when trying to look up the name of the game to get the box art. It’s not Infestation, but I know what you’re thinking ;)

So, technically, as the game name hasn’t been guessed yet…

;)
It’s Incubation!
In SER tion?

Edit: whoops! not paying enough attention!

Haha, Incubation! I remember my great disappointment when instead of finding the X-COM killer with better graphics I was expecting I was greeted by a very unforgiving puzzle game which happened to feature aliens. I remembered the cover because of the weird stances of the marines-- just what exactly is that guy on the left doing?

I suspect one of the two:

 1. He’s doing a war-dance
 2. He’s just heard the alien overhead, has spun his arm+gun and head around and to his right to shoot it, has flinched back whilst doing this… all whilst firing the minigun.

Given how anatomically difficult 2) is he must therefore be doing a wardance.

(ps: Whilst it wasn’t an X-COM killer, it wasn’t awful! Even if the marines were comprised of 12 polygons. It was quite the 40K rip-off, which is probably why I liked it. It was the only space-marines-with-jetpack 3D game going at the time)

This was set in the Battle Isle universe, wasn’t it? I wasn’t familiar with that particular series and I guess I was so disappointed by Incubation that I never gave it a fair shake. I wonder if it’s on GOG.

EDIT: It is, apparently Battle Isle Platinum includes all the games.

Think it’s my turn again, let’s see how quickly this one goes!

Battle Chess?

So the box tells me, though I don’t ever remember knowing this fact (or even hearing of the Battle Isle series) before looking up the box.

As for the new image: Pikmin 3?

Nope to both guesses.

Some Simon the Sorcerer?

GET OUT OF MY MIND

Not Simon, good guess though!

I wonder if this game is as known as I thought it was… given its pedigree and all

Betrayal at Antara?

We have a winner!

Admission: I never actually played it; however, I did gift it to my father-in-law when he finally got a PC that could play games (waaaaaay back in the day), which is why the cover is memorable to me. He is a pen-and-paper RPG geek, and I was trying to get him interested in CRPGs. While he enjoyed it, he’s still not really into CRPGs. He did get really in to MMOs for a while, though, but I think he’s now mostly a Hearthstone and HoMM player.

To be honest, despite having it boxed in mint condition I never played it either. Probably because I never got round to finishing Betrayal at Krondor and kept postponing until I did… yes my backlog goes that way back.

Okay, here we go.

A bigger reveal to see if any guesses show up …

Humans.
