Star Citizen - Chris Roberts, lots of spaceship porn, lots of promises

Never tell me the odds.

Well, this is a bummer because I always seem to kill the replicant instead of the human. But a job’s a job…

Things are getting serious on Reddit. Where to file a refund complaint against Roberts Space Industries

Meanwhile, new leak out of CIG posted earlier today by a prolific insider/leaker

Stop trying to get refunds. Your money, that you gave us, is gone. It went to developing dreams; not yours, but the >people in charge here. You paid for them to live out their dreams: Ben, who finally got to work with his idol; Sandi, who >got back into acting; Chris who got to direct an absolutely stellar A list cast. For everyone else, you’ve given them >hundreds of thousands, if not millions, to pursue whatever they want to do. I’m sure they thank you for helping them do >what they’ve only dared dreamed.

The rest of us politely say “Stop emailing us asking for your money back.” I know the official line is that everything is >great and we are making money like crazy, but it’s not. Things here are dire. They’ve been dire for awhile but you can >feel the shame and terror every time you walk into the building. I know this is coming off harsh. I don’t care. I’m sick of >working here and I’m especially sick of the whiny emails I continue to get. What did you expect?

I cashed out four months ago via GM. If you can sell a ship to a buyer, take it. Take it for half. Just take it.

You can also email and ask for a partial refund for 10%. Those we will approve without a problem, although it might >take six or eight weeks to process now. Otherwise, stop asking, stop emailing and stop whining. Just stop.

@dsmart is just trying to scare you all away so he can buy up all of the $850 “game changer” ships they just announced since they are limited edition. Don’t let him scare you away from such an amazing bargain!

The game change is that it doesn’t exist I think. Not sure.

$850 for a JPEG. That’s in limited quantity. No, I didn’t make that up. At all.

Someone dug up a 2013 interview Chris Roberts did with Forbes explaining how devs mislead publishers with fake demos. It’s amazing that he’s been doing precisely that during this project. Using demos to lie to backers AND the media.

FF to @ 22:55

He actually says stuff in there that makes sense. It’s weird given the way this project has run completely off the rails: it’s like he has some understanding of what bad practices are, and maybe how to avoid some of them, but ended up chasing all sorts of crazy will-o-the-wisps almost like he couldn’t help himself.

It’s a general principle that the people who talk the longest about underhanded practices and how they aren’t like that are in fact lying.

I can’t imagine they’d actually prevent anyone from buying that pic if they tried, right? Limited quantities has got to be complete BS.

At the rate he’s going he’s bound to run out of pixels.

Someone’s right click->Copy finger could get carpal tunnel. You gotta regulate that shit.

LMAO!!! It’s really about placing artificial supply and demand, while making the whales buying this crap, feel special.

It’s hilarious. They have a massive backlog of JPEG ships they have yet to build, let alone implement in the game. And NONE of them, outside of the fighters, have ANY gameplay mechanics implemented. They have ships for mining, farming, trading, passengers, exploration, and even a news ship. Seriously, I’m not making that up. And NONE of those mechanics are in the game.

If I’m lying, I’m dying. Here, take a look: https://starcitizentracker.github.io/

Ok, I didn’t believe that one: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/pledge/ships/reliant/Reliant-Mako-News-Van

Told you.

Well 1,000,000 could be the limit. :)

That news van is almost, ALMOST as stupid as face tracking. Almost.

When I see something like the news ship, I start imagining it. And in my imagination, it’s pretty cool. I’d fly my news ship to different parts of the universe – maybe I’d do an easy story on the emerging mining industry in a low-population sector, or I could cover a battle between two player-led factions. I could submit my stories and footage to the RSI news station or website and maybe compete with other players’ footage and stories to become the story that ultimately runs, with tiered rewards. Covering emergent stories in online games is? That’d be some cool stuff.

Some people (how people continue to do this at this point, I have no idea) stop there and drop a hundred bucks.

I think about it for more than, like, ten seconds, though. And I realize that in order for my vision to be realized, not only would Star Citizen need to be functioning in the first place, but it would also need a system for video capture and a system for submitting user stories (and then at least one paid human person to select and publish them). Oh, and it would have to be a game that had emergent gameplay in the first place.

IF that news van is ever realized, it’s going to amount to a news-themed skin for a ship, and you’ll have to fill in the journalist fantasy on your own. Which I suspect will also be true of game as a whole – if they deliver ANYTHING, it’s going to be the most minimally viable product anyone has ever seen.

I imagine it as a ship that can scoop up black boxes that are ejected from destroyed ships. You can open the black box for a chance at getting a Space Pulitzer, which is worth ten gigastarbucks. Or it might just contain a Space Obituary, which you cash in for three starbucks by delivering it to any non-hostile Space Editor. Most players will just sell their unopened boxes on the auction house.

Oh, and the ship can be upgraded to carry weapons, so you can make your own news.
