Warframe: silly named F2P coop TPS

I tried this over the weekend after I realized how disappointing Mass Effect: Andromeda multiplayer is. Went in expecting another TPS horde morde game so you can imagine my surprise when I found myself stealthing around levels, popping heads with the bow, doing wall runs and double jumps to avoid trip lasers while breaking into data storage vaults, etc.

Best part? The main reason why I played after the initial hours is because of just how damn good the gameplay is. Talk about responsiveness, jesus! This is hands down one of the smoothest action games I’ve played, it’s crazy how satisfying it is just to navigate the levels.

I started out with the Excalibur set and I’m really liking the Exalted Blade - it’s only rank 2 (I think my suit is at 25) but still shreds enemies, so I was thinking of building around it. Mod system is genius, once I got done with Earth and went to Venus to face a new faction I quickly realized that my bow isn’t cutting it so I bought the Boltron (?) and went to town on the hordes of enemies. I’m also a fan of the pressure based mission system - they keep giving you rope to hang yourself but if you know when to stop pushing you can reap some pretty good rewards.

And did I mention how satisfying it is to use the bow? God. Damn. Hitboxes seem generous though, during early missions I had 90+ hit ratio with around 60% headshots, it feels like the arrows get guided towards the head if you aim close enough.

Also, I’m not sure if I’m imagining it but it feels like levels are procedurally generated?

And finally - any tips for a newbie? I plan on playing mostly solo.

Pretty sure they’re procedurally generated, yeah. One of the things I wasn’t so hot on when I tried the game lo these many years ago. I need to revisit it one of these days. It sounds like there’s been an enormous amount of stuff added or upgraded.

I need to get back into it – Titanfall 2 seriously took me away from it – but yeah, Warframe is daaaaaaaaaamed great.

Any good early weapon recommendations? I like to melee and I’m a pretty decent shot with semi-autos (better than tracking with autos, actually), especially hitscan. I was thinking of picking up Lantron as primary, Sonicor as second and whatever gets recommended for melee, lol. I watched an old vid from 2016 that recommended Amphis - does it still hold up? Fwiw my current setup is Branton, Kunai (hardly ever use it) and Mk-1 Bo.

Are you playing on console? I don’t remember any aim assist on PC (though it may be there as an option).

Amphis would be respectable as an early weapon. Really though, you can make most weapons viable with strong mods, so try to find weapons you enjoy using. That’s a significant part of the game, trying out new and interesting weapons.

No, I’m on PC. I checked the options and didn’t find any aim assist for mouse (there is for controller).

I picked up the dual ether swords from the foundry today and discovered a few more intricacies of the melee system - until I started reading I had no idea I can do air spins or wall attacks. Love it, for an arpg this combat system has tons of depth.

My favorite part of the game so far is sneaking into those data vaults without triggering any alarms.

But the one thing that really stands out and makes the game fun is the procedural generation of levels. Not so much how the pieces fit together but simply because the emphasis is on the moment, you don’t have to worry about layouts and getting bored running the same levels over and over again (like for example grinding in Borderlands games), you just focus on killing and loot whatever you come across. And the combat system has just enough depth on the mechanical/input side that I’m starting to think it might be a good template for a perfect arpg.

Can’t wait until MR3 so I can get myself that oversized 2h sword :).

Make sure you bookmark the Warframe Wiki, it is great resource.

Also make sure you pay attention to alerts and the game chat, you can usually be able to get a “taxi” to alerts you haven’t unlocked on planets yet.

Also do all the quests you get, some of them might be a bit hard but I guess you can always ask in the public chat for people to join, or just start a queue for it and press ‘wait for more players’.

It is easily one of the best pc games and it is even free to play!

You can buy a lot of recipes for money gained, I guess initially you’ll not have much cash but once you’ve maxed one frame to 30 + weapons, there are usually some money farming groups you can join if you want (usually join those to level a weapon from 1-30). Eventually you’ll also get items you can use to upgrade your weapons + warframe, meaning a mod that takes 14 of your total (30 or 60) will only take cost 7, for example. Oh yea, you can upgrade your capacity on equipment + warframe from 30 (at max level) to 60.

Took me many levels until I realized you can make a lot of different weapon damage combinations.

Like Electricity and Fire, Fire and Ice, ICe and Electricity, Poison and Ice etc… to get RAdiation, Toxic, Magnetism, Gas, Blast. Which have different +/- effects depending on what kind of targets you fight, such as reducing their armor by a %, or cutting their health in half, or making them go crazy and fight for you for a while, etc etc…

Good to hear you enjoy it, a lot more people should play Warframe instead of all the other crap that is out there :)

The only downside is that their matchmaking algorithm still isn’t perfect, but they working on it.

Oh yea, there’s also a bunch of Players vs. Player modes you can do eventually.

I think I played my “starter” frame up to MR10 or something (Had the stealth class Loki
); before I started playing Nekros a lot (it can increase the drop chance on loot by a lot, bring a vacuum mod, or a Helios (which scans targets for you into your Codex).

Not sure when you unlock Syndicates, but they give you access to extra mods, weapons and lets you buy void keys.

But tip #1: Do Alerts. All of them. Always.
Tip #2: Follow the Alert-Twitter/web page to not miss out on stuff, for example there’s a mod that reduce enemy armor by a high %, (Corrosive Projection) which really helps on some enemy types. It is a bit rare to get (probably played for a year before I got it… mostly cause I didint’ know about it).

Close to 1100 hours logged now :)

Thanks for the tips! I’m doing all the alerts I can, they seem like a great way to get credits.

I’ve already queued a bunch of weapons in the foundry since I’m leveling the ones I have pretty fast. Well, primary and melee at least. Right now I’m playing with the Strun shotgun and it’s just so damn great, love it. I have a rank 4 Multishot and rank 3 reload/cold dmg mod. and I’ve also started building the Rhino parts so I can make the suit once I get a bit more credits and some of the final mats I’m missing. I’m not really in a rush though, Excalibur is a pretty great suit - did a Nightmare mode mission (the ones where you have to protect data while Lotus hacks it) with level 25 infested enemies earlier with it and got carried pretty hard by the Exalted blade, lol. After Rhino I’ll go for a Loki and try out the stealth playstyle.

Question - is it safe to sell the weapons with a silver laurel (max rank) if I no longer plan on using them? I have some Mk-1 weapons that I’ve maxed out and was thinking of selling to free up some slots for new ones and make some credits at the same time.

Also, I’ve just unlocked Archwing. Mind = blown. How is this game free and why isn’t it talked about more??

Because everyone else plays CS/Battlefield/Fish(COD). Which I guess means the community is much better than it otherwise would’ve been :P

I keep all my weapons, so I very often have to pay a bit of platinum to increase the inventory size. One of the reasons is that sometimes they introduce new recipes for weapons that require another weapons as an ingredient (not often mind you). + I like to keep all of them in case I get a great mod for them (You can get a super-mods (or a shitty one, but still, purple!) from doing a latter level quest) that make a bad weapon suddenly awesome.

Right now I’m using my sidearm pistol because I got a mod that makes the target explode for the 40% of the full health of the target, when I kill them, thanks to a mod I got, which seems fun :)

You could try and go for this with a melee build frame for example; it looks fun so I’ll try some of the stuff related to that :)

Also, the Rhino is really good, especially on Nightmare missions where you many times have no shields.
You can make different ‘builds’ depending on what kind of mission you go on, or if you’re gonna be buffing a group etc… For example to increase the range of your buff, the duration of the buff, or the strenght of the buff, or a combination, or the “cost” so it gets cheaper. The Wiki usually has a tips and tricks + information on the mod combinations you can setup on your frames for best use.

Easter-egg:
Try using: “Wyrmius” as your login email next time you start the game, and leave password blank:

No kidding. I mean I used to like CoD too but this is next level. The last time I played a shooter that was this fast and responsive was probably over 15 years ago. And I just love the philosophy of its design, the only thing you have worry about when playing is what’s in immediate vicinity of your character, with full focus on combat and traversing the randomly generated levels.

I went for the Rhino because it’s accessible really fast and it was recommended as a good suit for solo play (as was Loki) and for now I’m mostly soloing while I’m waiting for my friend to get bored of Wildlands and join me. That said, I did group for a few missions and was pleasantly surprised at how responsive it was, despite the p2p system. Tower capture for example is pretty annoying solo and I imagine that convoy escort is as well since you have to wait for shield regen.

Another question - what’s the best course of action for duplicate low level mods? Convert to rares, sell for credits or convert to endo?

Absolutely. The only time I keep ones I don’t expect to use often are when the recipe was very expensive. I just have a hard time letting those go because of the effort put in making them.

I have wondered if the thread title served to squelch conversation here.

Convert to endo. You will never have enough endo. And consider keeping a couple of extra copies of some mods to create downranked versions for the occasions when you’re leveling up weapons or frames and can’t fit max rank mods.

I’ve often wondered the same. The game is excellent and while it’s F2P model isn’t as generous as something like PoE, I find it very reasonable.

Indeed. Warframe is the only free-to-play game I’ve ever spent quite a bit of money on, and without regrets. I feel it’s overall very fair and the game is definitely worth it.

I should go back to it. :)

Made rank 22 AND finally got the ‘war’ melee weapon recipe. now I just need to get 4-5 rare resources from missions and I can make it :)

Did the rank 30 daily quest but only got 4000 edo(?). Was hoping for one of those purple mods that is actually useful. Maybe next time. People were in such a rush to start mission 3 for the daily that I didn’t have time to get the right frame setup for it… but we managed it anyway. Rhino Stomp was the only useful ability I could use + buff.

Streamed it to Youtube and Twitch. For some reason the Twich video quality is horrible compared to Youtube. Kinda sucks that everything looks so pixelated on Twitch.

I got the Dread blueprint today, looking forward to switching to bows again because I really hate having to reload every 3-4 mobs with most weapons I’ve used so far. I just can’t decide on a frame, I’m a little torn between Loki and Ivara. I’ll probably go for the latter since I have 2 parts already and I’m 1 planet away from reaching the spot where I can farm bp and the last missing part. Plus I won’t feel bad about applying potato to a non-prime frame.

Dread + Loki probably accounts for 25% of my total playtime still, or maybe it is down to 20% now.

Some + Crit Chance/Damage and the ability to have the arrows pass through multiple targets make fore nice damage :)

Course, once targets are level 80+ most weapons seem to be useless.

The Soma is a nice gun that lets you fire a lot before having to reload. I used it loads in the old days.

Any opinions on Octavia? I like the concept and I’m intrigued, and I do have some plat lying around. ;)

Haven’t unlocked it yet (been slacking). I’ll do the missions for it now and see how far I can go. The concept seems kinda interesting, but not sure how it plays out. Believe players on your team need to ‘dance’ to get a buff or something like that :P

Believe you can get ‘tunes’ for the frame or make your own, that people hear when the little disco ball runs around doing damage… but again, no idea how it is to pilot.

Gonna test out my Rakta Dark Dagger now to see if It can be used for anything fun, guess I’ll stream the Octavia quest while doing so. Looks like switching encoding for OBS made Twitch image quality improve a bit.
Twitch link that doesn’t autoplay because of some peoples browsers being meh.

Managed to get Octavia quest completed (kinda interesting “boss fight” at the end as well as getting the Octavia pieces (Chassis + systems) in about 4 hours of playing.

If you love LUA you’re gonna have a good time, if not, you’ll get to know LUA a lot better :P
