When do the next generation GPUs drop?

Hmm, I guess whoever sent me a notification email today didn’t get that memo-- I got an email today telling me I had 20 hours to decide to buy (for US $809.99 shipped) a 10G-P5-3885-KLRTX 3080 XC3 Ultra Gaming 10GB GDDR6X, iCX3 Cooling, ARGB LED, Metal Backplate, LHR.

Of course, now that I have an RTX 3060 Ti I really don’t need it. :-\

Let no one say that the effing cryptominers were to blame, though. It’s purely coincidence that the bottom fell out of the cryptocurrency market recently, I’m sure. Post hoc non ergo propter hoc and all that.

My 3070 is at the bottom of all their comparison charts.

I got that too, followed immediately by an email saying they were ending the queue system. So I suppose it’s all part of a somewhat tumultuous return to normalcy or something.

$780 is the best price I can see for a 3080 now. I think I paid that for my 3070 :/ Though that was ages ago so I shouldn’t complain.

Ha! I just checked my emails and I got the “queue system is ending” email before the one telling me I was eligible to buy. Two days ago for the former, 1 day ago for the latter.

$770. $10 less, 2GB more

With 12 GB no less. Very nice. Hooray for banning cryptocurrencies (or whatever caused the stupid markets therein to drop precipitously). Graphics cards are for graphics, not that BS.

Are prices creeping back upward?

The 6800XT I bought from Newegg last month ($849 - $50 instant savings = $799) is now suddenly $949 after a month+ at the $799 price. Other 6800XTs appear to be climbing back up, too.

Cryptocurrency is starting to trend back up after the fall in the last few weeks, I guess.

Yeah. Glad I bought at what appears to be the absolute dip.

Wouldn’t have said so… Here’s a $760 3080 for example.

Here the cheapest 3080s seems to be 20€ more expensive than a month ago.

A friend of my son’s was asking for gfx card recommendations today… should he hold off for the 4000s or get a 3060/70? He’s been using an older card (he didn’t quite know what it is) for 2 years, but the rest of his computer is fairly new.

Unless you absolutely need something now, I would wait until the 4000 series launches.

Normally I would agree but given 2020 my advice is if you need a GPU and see something at a reasonable price, buy it.

Won’t the 4000 series get you potentially needing a PSU upgrade as well?

That and an AC upgrade as well for playing during summertime.
